One of the worlds best known softwares to create vector art is Adobe Illustrator. We understand that Illustrator is a great professional software and unfortunately, not everyone can have access to it.
Inkscape is a solution for those who want an open-source and free option. Since our main goal is to make all utilities on the Desktop app accesible for the Scribit Community - here's a quick guide that explains how to prepare your Inkscape file and upload it on create.scribit.design.
1) Download Inkscape
Here's the link where you can download the software for free as an OS compatible file. Proceed to install it following the steps provided by the software.
2) Setup your artboard size
Change your default settings,
into the following ones:
- Set Units from mm to px.
- Set Width and Height to 1024.
*TEMPLATE: Click on the following link to download an empty SVG template that is already set up in the correct way according to sizes and layers.
3) Setup the layers correctly
Every layer must be named and arranged exactly in the mentioned way below. Every layer corresponds to one of the four Scribit pen holders. "m1" is the 1st color Scribit will draw, and "m4" will be the last.
If your design has just 1 color, you can avoid creating the rest of the layers.
In order to know in which layer an object is located - just Hide/Show the layers and see what appears/disappears in your artboard. Before you start creating your design, make sure you have preselected the color designated layer (m1, m2, m3 or m4).
If you want to move an object from one layer to another:
- cut the object.
- select the desired layer.
- paste the object inside the selected layer.

4) Create your design
Now you are ready to start your design with all the tools inside the software. Remember that Scribit is only able to understands strokes. The stroke width of your Scribit drawing is defined by the stroke width of your marker. On your Inkscape file, the stroke width you choose will be just a simulation.
Please, avoid any fill, shade, or grouped objects as they can make your file unvalid for our platform at create.scribit.design.
Every text object should be traced or it won't be recognized. You can simply do it by clicking on Path > Object to Path (or Shift+Ctrl+c).
Fundamentally, preparing a design for Scribit is quite a similar process as creating a file for a laser cut machine or a CNC machine, if you are already familiar with these terms.
Be careful about imported objects: remember they must always be converted into paths.
